Are Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Pellets Right For Me?
Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) pellets are small, rice-sized pellets that are placed under the skin during an office visit and release a continuously measured amount of hormones over several months.
Pellet therapy is fast and easy. Patients meet with their bioidentical hormone doctor every three to five months for a simple pellet insertion. During a routine in-office procedure, the tiny pellets are inserted into the hip or buttock area.
Pellets maintain their effectiveness twenty-four hours a day for several months. The key to pellet therapy is the use of bioidentical hormones. These hormones are chemically structured to be identical to what the body produces.
Synthetic hormones, primarily used in oral and injectable therapies, have several different side effects. Weight gain, mood swings, and general irritation are typical, which is unfortunate because that’s what hormone replacement therapy is supposed to solve.
This gives you peace of mind to know that you will get your hormone replacement consistently without having to worry about it.
History of Pellet Therapy
Pellets for bioidentical hormone replacement therapy are not new. They have been utilized for nearly 100 years. However, their use declined in the 1950’s and 1960’s due to the explosion of synthetic hormones such as Premarin and Provera. Premarin (Pregnant Mare Urine) contains over 20 estrogen-like chemicals that are not natural to humans. Premarin and the progestin Provera were subsequently evaluated in a landmark study called the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study that linked synthetic hormone replacement with an increased risk of thromboembolic disease, stroke, and breast cancer. Fortunately, pellet therapy utilizing hormones that are identical to those found in the human body never went away. Pellet therapy is now recognized as a safe, convenient and highly effective way to manage symptoms related to hormone deficiency.
