Laser Tattoo Removal

Nearly 30% of Americans have at least one tattoo. A whopping 25% of them regret getting a tattoo in the first place. If you’re in the 25%, we have good news for you. Laser tattoo removal is a safe method that targets only the inked skin, completely removing the visible tattoo. Don’t let that tattoo you no longer want hold you back in life financially, socially, or mentally. Talk to a specialist at DragonFly MedSpa today to discuss getting your tattoo/s removed.

How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?

Multiple needles puncture your skin, dragging ink particles through your epidermis (the top layer of skin) into the dermis in the tattoo application process. Our bodies recognize the pigment as foreign material and try to get rid of it by sending white blood cells. The white blood cells travel through the bloodstream and “eat” the pigment. When they’re successful, they carry the ink through the lymphatic system.

Unfortunately for those who no longer want their tattoos, this process takes a long time as white blood cells are much smaller than ink particles. This is why the best you can hope for as time passes is that your tattoos fade.

Lasers hit the pigment granule with a high-intensity light beam shattering the pigment granule. The pigment granules become smaller and more edible, accelerating the speed at which the white blood cells can eat the pigment granules and transport them to the liver to be removed from the body.

Ok, enough with the science. Let’s talk about what a laser tattoo removal session looks like at DragonFly MedSpa.A topical anesthetic will be applied to numb the skin during every session. Next, we will cover the tattoo with a clear gel pad and cover your eyes with a protective eye shield.

Your technician will test your skin’s reaction to the laser to determine the best energy level for treatment. Advanced laser technology allows us to pass pules of light through the top layer of your skin and directly into tattoo pigment only.

After each treatment, your tattoo should become less and less visible.

Is Laser Tattoo Removal Painful?

How much laser tattoo removal hurts depends on your pain tolerance. Most patients compare the removal process to having a tattoo applied. It’s uncomfortable but bearable. We offer skin-numbing anesthetic to ensure patient satisfaction during sessions.

Laser tattoo removal is safer (assuming you go to a qualified practitioner) than other removal methods like excision, dermabrasion, and salabrasion since the treatment treats just the pigment under the dermis. Excision is an invasive technique requiring a scalpel to remove your tattoo from your skin. Dermabrasion sands the skin removing the outer layer of skin. Salabrasian is a dangerous tattoo removal method that we do NOT recommend.

Will Laser Tattoo Removal Leave Scars?

After the tattoo removal process, any scars left over are leftover from when the tattoo was originally applied and not from the removal. It’s unlikely that q-switch laser tattoo removal will result in new scars forming. During initial patient consultations, we check for scarring and note it before beginning treatment.

How Long Does It Take?

The two questions we get asked the most are “how long will a session take,” and “how many sessions will I need?”. The process can take up to a year with up to 10 treatments spaced out a minimum of 6 weeks. With 52 weeks in a year, your treatment timeline can extend over a year.

Practitioners cannot determine exactly how many treatments will be necessary. Instead, they can assess the patient’s tattoo, complexion, and response to the first treatments. Then they’ll determine an estimated timeline after evaluating these factors.

Q Switch Tattoo Removal

A q-switch laser is the newest laser tattoo removal technology giving specialists the ability to penetrate down to the dermis (inner layer of skin) and break up tattoo ink without causing damage to surrounding skin tissue. This method also easily allows for partial tattoo removal if you want to get rid of a certain someone’s name. Q switch tattoo removal is safe, effective at preventing scarring, and effective at removing tattoo pigment.

If you’re considering getting your ink removed, schedule a consultation with our tattoo removal specialist to advise you on the process and your options.
